Absolutely, positively, the best gun commercial ever!

Author: Courtenay Vermeulen 2010/10/01

News was buzzing last month about the September 22nd vote in the House of Commons that would decide the fate of Bill C-391 – a private member’s bill to kill the wasteful long-gun registry. Sadly, we lost by a mere 2 votes and C-391 was struck down.

It made for busy times here at the CTF as we sent out Action Updates to rally supporters, and strategized as best we could to keep the pressure on to kill the registry. We watched as a select group of Liberal and NDP MPs switch their votes one by one, under pressure from party bosses.

Just like a carnival ride, the spin put on this thing was dizzying and made you want to toss your cotton candy. It was no longer about the wishes of taxpayers – 72% felt the registry was ineffective – at least not for Jack Layton and Michael Ignatieff. They even ignored that 92% of rank and file police officers admitted in an online poll that the registry should be scrapped.

Does anyone else think it’s weird that the debate turned into whether or not we get rid of the registry because there’s something wrong with it, or keep the registry and FIX it, again, because there’s something wrong with it.

We’re still shaking our heads, because as we all know, there is a lot that’s wrong with the registry, including the amount of tax dollars required to keep this sham going! Indeed there is already a parallel licensing system for guns in Canada in addition to the redundant registry. Besides, as much as we would like them to, criminals don’t register their guns. A supporter who knows this sent us a funny gun control video – it’s a good little chuckle.

With a tip of our hat to all those who donated funds, signed the petition, and contacted MPs in our 15 year fight to end the registry, we bring you “Absolutely, positively, the best gun commercial ever!” Thanks for all your support, everyone!
